Ahhh, Rochester (or should we say Rah! Rah! Rochester?)! There are some of us–although we are a rare breed–that have called this lovely city home for our entire lives.  Maybe some of us moved away, but we still have fond memories of all the funny little quirks about our old stomping grounds. Growing up in Rochester was delightful…it’s great to reminisce about all the fun places come and gone. So here is our ultimate list of “You Know You Grew up in Rochester if..”  Do you have anything to add to this list?

You Know You Grew Up in Rochester If…

  • You don’t think twice about seeing a giant Corn on the Cob in the skyline.
  • “Rochester…Lapidaaary Jewelers, when you wanna look good…”
  • Everyone assumes your parents are doctors.
  • Eating pizza from anywhere besides Mr. Pizza is a sin.
  • You saved the ends of your bread loaves for the geese at Silver Lake.
    • And then had to take off your shoes before getting in the car!
  • You spent Friday night listening to KROC’s Top 9 at 9 and repeatedly called in to win that Dr Pepper!
  • You “cruised Broadway” every Friday night with your friends.
  • You have a hard time letting go of that Mayo/JM/Century rivalry. “You went there? Ooohhhh….”
  • You call it just “Mayo” or more commonly, “The Clinic.” You don’t call it “The Mayo” or “Mayos.”
  • You had a birthday party at Shakey’s Pizza.
  • You begged your parents to move to “The Manor.”
  • You remember eating ice cream at Bridgeman’s.
  • Your family went out to eat at Esteban’s, The Smiling Moose, or The Aviary.
  • You went back to school shopping at Dayton’s.
  • Hobby Lobby used to be Target!
  • You know where the Galleria was.
  • You had a field trip to the Planetarium at Mayo High School!
  • You celebrated big milestones at Michael’s Restaurant.
  • You went digging for fossils at Quarry Hill.
  • You remember that there used to be an entire movie theater in the mall parking lot!
  • A normal Wednesday night was spent at the $1.50 theater.
  • You call Highway 14 the Belt-Line.
  • You skated to Kokomo at Skate Country (couples skate!) and had at least one birthday there (traded on and off with Shakey’s!)
  • “There’s a proper place for your waste in Olmmmsted County.”
  • You know that Chuck Hazama and Shjon Podein are Rochester royalty.
  • When high school football season was over, Friday nights were spent watching the Rochester Mustangs.
  • Your Saturday mornings included a stop at Mister Donut.
  • You remember that there was a movie theater where University of Minnesota-Rochester campus is now.
