SEMVA Art Gallery

Free | Closed Sundays

Nestled inside the lobby of the Kahler Grand Hotel, with more artworks sprinkled throughout the hotel’s mezzanine level, SEMVA Art Gallery is a vibrant collective run by the artists themselves. The gallery showcases an ever-changing mix of paintings, pottery, photography, sculptures, woodwork, folk art, jewelry, and more — all created by regional makers from southeastern Minnesota. Feel free to come back again and again, as the gallery’s rotating exhibits and handmade items make each visit a little different. You might even get a chance to meet some of the artists and chat about their process and, of course, possibly take home an artful souvenir.

Another artist-run gem that celebrates local talent, cozy Gallery 24 features fine art and craft pieces from over 20 member artists, including fiber art, mixed media, glasswork, and more. With many affordably priced works that are ready to take home, it’s a fantastic spot to support Rochester’s creative community. This vibrant hub also hosts themed exhibits, special events like artisan markets and a kids’ art summer camp, and even classes for both children and adults.

Rochester Art Center

$8 for Adults, Gallery Admission | Closed Mondays & Tuesdays

The Rochester Art Center, a contemporary art museum, is the centerpiece of the city’s art scene. Featuring local, regional, national and international artists, the center explores society’s relationship with art through thought-provoking installations and exhibits. The airy, architecturally stunning building is worth a visit alone, and their art-filled gift shop is a great place to find books, prints and handmade items. For an especially insightful visit, join one of the docent-led tours or get hands-on by making something at The Creative Studio. Or, take your gallery visit on the road by checking out the Rochester Art Center’s many Art4Trails sculpture installations that are viewable at parks and along bike trails throughout the city.

James Krom Natural Images

With two locations in downtown Rochester, one on the subway level of the Marriott Hotel and the other on the skyway level of the Hilton Hotel, James Krom Natural Images brings the outside in with works celebrating the beauty of nature. From landscape paintings, wildlife drawings and woodcarvings to art glass, bronze sculptures, jewelry and more, these carefully curated galleries are must-sees for art appreciators, animal lovers and outdoor enthusiasts alike. Stop in for a new piece to add to your collection or to simply pause and appreciate nature’s majesty.

 

Threshold Arts

Part creative hub, part retail gallery, Threshold Arts is a community-focused space where Rochester artists and makers shine. In partnership with the Historic Chateau Theater, the gallery includes an eclectic mix of works by more than 50 local visual artists alongside a shop with prints, ceramics, cards, apparel, and more. It’s a great place to pick up artful gifts and support local creatives while enjoying the energy of downtown. Or, stop by for one of their special events, like panel discussions, ladies’ nights out, and more.

 

Charles E. Gagnon Museum & Sculpture Garden

This hidden gem celebrates the life and work of Charles E. Gagnon, a Rochester-born artist and sculptor best known for his bronze works inspired by the human spirit. Nestled in a residential neighborhood, the Charles E. Gagnon Museum and Sculpture Garden includes a serene sculpture garden (open from May to October), exhibits of Gagnon’s work, and stories about his artistic contributions. The inspiring and contemplative space is ideal for a quiet afternoon of reflection and discovery. Joining one of the guided tours, led by Gagnon’s wife, is required.

 

The Guerin

Varies | By Appointment or During Special Events

A vibrant blend of studio, gallery, and performance space, The Guerin is the passion project of artist and musician John Guerin, home to mixed-media works and paintings, many with musical inspirations, as well as vintage guitars. This studio and gallery hosts curated pop-ups, private events, and eclectic exhibitions that mix visual art with live music, art classes, and music lessons. It’s a dynamic, ever-changing space that offers something different every time and a true hidden gem in downtown Rochester.
