New to Wellness? How to Set Yourself Up for Success

Fitness is a process and, as they say in yoga, a practice. There is no finish line. Instead, wellness is a journey of continuous growth and learning and something you should explore in a way and at a pace that is right for you. Here are a few tips to help you along the way.

Try Out Everything to Find Something You Love Doing

A workout that feels like a chore will never be sustainable, and pigeonholing yourself into doing an exercise you dislike will only land your fitness routine on your list of failed New Year’s resolutions. The most successful wellness practice is the one you enjoy doing again and again. Mine is yoga, especially a vinyasa or power yoga class that combines strength and stretching—even better if the room is heated to a toasty 90 to 110 degrees. Although really anything that gets me on my mat and in touch with my breath and body will do.

After trying everything from boot-camp-style fitness and kickboxing to a basic treadmill-and-weights routine, I keep coming back to yoga. Sure, it might not be the exercise that comes to mind when you think about a typical workout. But yoga does make me feel strong and centered, help with my flexibility and, most importantly, keep me moving. However, I never would have gotten here if I hadn’t found out what didn’t work for me first. Many places offer discounted classes or even free classes to first-timers, making for a cost-effective way to try things out.

Listen to Your Body and Go at Your Own Pace

Wellness isn’t a competition, despite what social media might have you believe. Comparing your progress to anyone else is only going to set you up for disappointment. Although Instagram, TikTok and Google are good places to go for fitness ideas and workout routines, they should not be points of comparison or critique. Every body is different, and you need to listen to yours to find what is best for you. It’s ok to rein things in if you’re sore or tired and to give yourself grace if you are feeling discouraged because there will also be days when you feel strong and ready to challenge yourself. You’ll be more likely to stay motivated if you do what feels good to you.

Stretch It Out

Stretching your body is just as important as strengthening your muscles, especially with so many people now sitting at desks all day or working from home. Many aches and pains can be resolved with a simple stretching regimen that can be easily fit into a morning or bedtime routine or during your favorite TV show. Or, take your stretching to the next level with a yoga class. Yin yoga focuses on deep, passive stretches held for one to five minutes or even longer, making it perfect for those looking for extra relief. You can even book a session at Stretch Zone, a Rochester stretching studio with a five-star Google rating offering practitioner-assisted stretches that participants swear by. Best of all, your first 30-minute session is completely free.

Nurture Your Body and Spirit with Self-Care

It’s hard to pour yourself into fitness (or anything else, for that matter) if your cup is already close to empty. So, it’s important to slow things down and spend time on things that nourish you. After all, self-care counts as wellness, too, whether it’s a massage, a bath with a book and some candles or a quiet stroll through the woods. Not only will you be refreshed and ready to take on your next workout, but these caring practices can help you value and reconnect with your body while also serving as rewarding moments of motivation.
