A Day Trip to Waseca, MN: Where Small-Town Charm Meets Big-Time Fun

Looking to mix things up with a mini adventure that’s not too far from home?  Just an hour west of Rochester, the lakeside town of Waseca is a hidden gem waiting to be explored. With its blend of hands-on history, rich natural beauty, a surprising amount of adventure, and tons of charm, it’s the perfect destination for a day trip. No matter if you’re into skydiving, sipping craft beer, or strolling through boutique shops and scenic parks, Waseca offers a day trip that’s as laid-back or action-packed as you like.

But First, Breakfast!

Begin your Waseca adventure with a satisfying breakfast to fuel the day ahead. If you’re in the mood for a classic, small-town diner experience, Pheasant Cafe is the perfect place to start. This no-frills spot serves up hearty portions of breakfast favorites like pancakes, eggs, and hash browns, all made with a comforting, homey touch. For something a little more laid-back and cozy (think plush sofas to snuggle into), head to Jonnie Beans, a charming coffee shop inside the Miller–Armstrong Center. Alongside espresso drinks and freshly brewed coffee, you’ll find omelets, skillets, wild rice sausage links, just to name a few, and a friendly atmosphere that invites you to linger just a bit longer.

Morning: Start With History or High-Flying Adventure

After rolling into town and filling your belly, you have a big choice to make: Take a deep dive into Minnesota’s agricultural roots or jump out of a plane. (Yes, really. And, honestly, depending on which choice you make, you may want to save your breakfast for later.)

For those who like their adventures more grounded, Farmamerica is a must-visit. This 360-acre living history museum brings Minnesota’s farming heritage to life with hands-on exhibits, walking trails, and heritage buildings dating back to the 1850s. Wander through a one-room country schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, 1930s farmstead and more along the mile-long timeline trail. You can even try your hand at milking a (simulated) cow. It’s educational, scenic, surprisingly peaceful, and a lovely way to reconnect with the land and learn a thing or two while you’re at it.

On the other end of the thrill spectrum (basically as far as you can get) is Skydive Northstar, where you can take the leap — literally — and enjoy a tandem skydive with sweeping views of southern Minnesota’s patchwork farmland. If you’ve been craving an adrenaline rush, this is the place to check it off your bucket list. With experienced instructors and a strong safety record, even first-timers can feel confident as they soar 10,000+ feet above Waseca’s countryside.

Midday Interlude: Art, Parks, and Window Shopping

After your morning adventure, ease into a slower pace with a stroll through the Waseca Art Center, located downtown. This welcoming space showcases regional artists and rotating exhibits, often with an emphasis on nature, rural life, and community stories. It’s a quiet gem where you can catch your breath, soak up some creative inspiration, and maybe even take home a piece from the gift shop.

Or, stretch your legs at Maplewood Park, a lakeside haven just minutes from downtown. Towering trees, scenic overlooks, and walking trails through one of the last remaining corners of Big Woods hardwood forest in southern Minnesota make it a peaceful spot for a midday wander, especially if the weather’s cooperating. Like being on or by the water? The park also rests on the eastern bank of Clear Lake, offering a picturesque place to enjoy some fishing.

In the mood to browse instead? Waseca’s downtown shopping scene offers a quirky mix of boutiques and antique treasures. Start at Past & Present Antiques & Gifts, a haven of vintage finds and one-of-a-kind décor. Then, make your way to The Speckled Hen for curated women’s clothes and country-chic home goods, followed by Glitter and Grace and Homestead for cozy décor. If fashion and flowers are your thing, Zinnias Boutique offers stylish clothing, jewelry, and beautiful floral arrangements in a charming space.

Stop for Sweet Treats and Afternoon Sips

Need a little snack? Have dessert early and indulge in a little something sweet at Lush Cakes. This cheerful bakery is known for its cupcakes, cookies, breakfast pastries, macarons, and elaborately decorated custom cakes. Grab a coffee and a treat to go — or linger a while over a silky smooth latte to enjoy the cozy café vibes. The café is only open until 2 PM or 2:30 PM on Tuesday to Saturday. So, be sure to plan your day accordingly.

Before dinner, slow things down even further at one of Waseca’s breweries, offering a relaxing way to wind down your visit. Established in 2017, Ward House Brewery, the first of its kind to open in the city since the Prohibition Era, specializes in easy-drinking, small-batch brews served in a laid-back taproom with plenty of character. For a true farm-to-glass experience, head just north of town to Half Pint Brewing Company, the state’s first farm brewery. Along with rows of hops, you’ll also find a weekly rotation of bold craft brews and a welcoming patio space.

Dinner Time: Comfort Food with a Side of Nostalgia

When dinner rolls around, treat yourself to a slice of Americana at Barney’s Drive-In, a Waseca institution. You’ll find classic burgers, coney dogs, fries, and malts crafted out of locally sourced ingredients and served carhop-style in a retro setting that feels like a trip back in time. Sit outside, soak in the sunshine, and enjoy the simple joy of a root beer float before heading back to Rochester.

If you’re venturing out on a Thursday, Friday, Saturday, or Sunday afternoon, consider heading a few miles out of town to Pleasant Grove Pizza Farm. Tucked into the Waseca countryside, this charming pizza farm offers wood-fired pizzas made with produce grown right there in the backyard. It doesn’t get much fresher than that! Served picnic-style among rolling hills and flower gardens, simply find a shady spot under a tree and savor the flavor of summer. Keep in mind that only the pizza and drinks are provided. So, be sure to pack anything else you might need to enjoy your meal, like plates, cups, napkins, utensils (if you use them for pizza), and, yes, even something to sit on and a bag to throw your trash in at the end. While you’re waiting, take some time to wander the walking trails, see the resident goats and alpaca, and listen to live music.
