I have a confession to make, I am a crazy hamster mom. In fact, I may love the hamsters more than my kids do. We’ve had a few hamsters over the years but it wasn’t until a little black and white hamster named Oreo that I fell hard for hamsters. Oreo had a great personality, she would come and wait at the cage door to be taken out. She loved playing in the barbie doll house and was the sweetest thing. Unfortunately she met an untimely ending in the mouth of our golden doodle. I was traumatized and spent the entire day in bed, crying and watching movies. I refused to pet the dog for days and still have not completely forgiven her.
We have since purchased two new hamsters and I check on them every night before bed making sure they have enough food and water. I take them out and give them bits of lettuce and grapes. Sometimes I bring them into our bed at night which I am sure my husband just loves. We even have a little car that they can ride in and I will admit, I’ve taken more than a few pics of the hammies in the car. Ok fine, I’ve taken a few hammy selfies as well. Ain’t no shame in my game. If you follow me on instagram you will occasionally see me post pics of my kids hamsters with the hashtag #crazyhamsterlady. I have not gone so far as to create post videos yet.
We have even spread the fever to our friends. Ok well to our friends’ kids. But still. The more hamsters to love the merrier I say! There have been hamster races, a hamster wedding and yes, hamster funerals. You guys, how can I be so crazy for these furry rodents? Seriously, they are not really that far removed from rats, right? Yet, here I am, the crazy hamster lady, blogging with a hamster on my tummy as I type. In fact, I may have made my husband leave a hotel at 4 am to come home because a hamster was possibly dying. I am not proud of this fact but I really wanted to be there, for the hamster kids.
So if you, or your kids are looking for a pet and you don’t want a dog or cat, maybe consider a hamster. They are contained, well most of the time, are relatively quiet, don’t require vet care and are usually pretty friendly. Our favorite hamsters are fancy or teddy bear hamsters. They are also sometimes called syrain hamsters. If you really need hamster advice I am sure you can send me a private message, I won’t tell anyone.
