Books are significant over at the Grimm house. Fritz, who recently turned two, has developed a love for reading that makes my heart sing.
Fritz and I recently read Bake a Rainbow Cake! by Amirah Kassem and it is the perfect book for a curious and busy toddler, especially one who has recently discovered the joys of baking in his play kitchen at school. Bake a Rainbow Cake! is a whimsical, brightly colored book that is as much fun for parents to read as it is for your child.
Fritz and I adored reading this interactive book. There are wheels to spin, flaps to open, and tabs to pull. The colors are gorgeous; the read is engaging and also rewarding because, in the end, you get a beautiful cake! We talked about mixing the batter, opening and closing the oven (and how it is HOT), and at the end, we were in awe of all the beautiful sprinkles spilling from the pages.
Fritz’s favorite page in Bake a Rainbow Cake! was where we colored the many cakes. Children can spin the wheel, and cakes go from white to blue, pink, green, purple, and yellow. He was very interested in the green cake. He also loved the oven! By pulling on the tab, the cakes bake in the oven and come to life in beautiful colors.
There are so many great lessons in Bake a Rainbow Cake! We learned about baking and following directions. We chatted about colors and worked on Fritz’s fine motor skills by pulling the tabs. It was so cute to go through the steps with him and I loved how engaging the book is for his age.
Pour it! Mix it! Bake it! Frost it! Make a wish!
You’ve likely seen the author, Amirah Kassem’s, beautiful baking before. Her Flour Shop cakes are a staple on Instagram. The @flourshop Instagram has amassed a large fan base that has over 250,000 followers! It is therapeutic to watch the cake being cut and see the gorgeous sprinkles flow out. I’ve admired Amirah’s beautiful work and was excited to learn more about her passion for baking. She is an artist at heart and cake is her medium. Amirah is also the bestselling author of The Power of Sprinkles. Amirah is passionate about baking and grew up baking beside her mother in Mexico. She has mastered the art of multi-sensory experiences, which shines through in Bake a Rainbow Cake!
While Bake a Rainbow Cake! is certainly geared for the younger audience, I love that Amirah has other books for different age groups to help bring the whole family together with a love of cooking and spending time in the kitchen. Her book, The Magical Land of Birthdays, is about 10-year-old girl named Amirah who receives a magical cookbook for her birthday. This adorable book is fully of whimsy and magic as Amirah is transported to all corners of the world where she meets friends that are having birthdays too. In their adventures they learn about how different cultures celebrate birthdays and also how you can celebrate your birthday everyday! This book is perfect for tweens who just want to hold onto a bit of that childhood magic.
For grown-ups who are looking to add some creative magic into their baking, Amirah has written the Power of Sprinkles. This cookbook brings to life her magical cakes that you can bake right at home. Beyond that, the book is just adorable and colorful!
The best part about Bake a Rainbow Cake! is that we can read it and enjoy it together as a family. As many two-year-olds are, Fritz is very passionate about food. We hope to have him join us in the kitchen soon, and this is just the book to excite him about the endless possibilities and fun he can have along side of us.
