When in Doubt, Dance it Out

mom and daughter danceI have been known to bust a move, get down with my bad self, boogie, cut a rug, and groove. That’s right, I dance! Not well, mind you. You won’t be seeing me on “Dancing with the Stars” anytime soon, or “So You Think You Can Dance” (although, I do think I can dance). But I dance it out.

Dancing is a great way to relieve stress, let out the sillies, and to be free from the world for a moment. Have you ever seen the old “Grey’s Anatomy” episodes where Cristina and Meredith dance it out after a tough shift? Yep. This is what I am talking about. I want you to Dance. It. Out. Yes, you. But, Natalie. The world is kind of UGH right now. I can’t just “dance it out.” Oh, yes you can. I give you the green light, the go-ahead. Think of the headmistress from “School of Rock.” She couldn’t have fun because she was weighed down with all the pressure from the academy. Then Jack Black puts on good ol’ Fleetwood Mac and she is transformed. The stress melts away. She is lost in that song.

What song do you have that instantly puts you in a great mood? We all have one. Think about it for a moment or two. A song you blast in your earbuds or in the car, that you know every word to, and that you can dance your tush off to. The song that transforms you into a dance machine. For me, it’s “Money Grabber” by Fitz and the Tantrums. It’s not the most kid friendly, but you know what, that is a-okay. This is my song. The one that makes me just jump around, shake it out, and sing at the top of my lungs. I don’t care what I look like (more often than not I look like a fool, and I love it!) or how I sound when I sing. I just Dance. It. Out. I feel so much better after I do! Taking those 3 minutes to just shake it out can turn my whole day around.

So, the next time you are having a blah day or just need to shake it off, turn up that song, let your hair down, and Dance. It. Out.
