Try Something New: 6 Interesting Classes to Take in Rochester, MN

Rochester has a surprising mix of classes and workshops that make it easy to try something new without leaving town. Here are a few local options worth checking out.

An Evening at the Planetarium

Mayo High School Planetarium

Offered through Rochester Community Education, these programs take place at the planetarium inside Mayo High School. Each session focuses on a different theme, with topics like Mars, moons, and even alien life, so there’s always something new to experience.

Most programs are designed for ages 5 and up, though there are a few options for younger kids. Both adults and children need to register, and there is a $6 fee per person.

For even more stargazing, the Rochester Astronomy Club hosts regular night sky viewing events that are free and open to the public. You can bring your own telescope or use one of the club’s. Follow RAC on Facebook to stay in the loop on upcoming events and check out their blog so you know what to expect before you go.

Saturday Night Yoga at People’s Food Co-op

The PFC’s yoga class is a warm, feel-good flow led by instructor Emma Smith and is welcoming for beginners and more experienced yogis.

The class runs every Saturday from 7 to 8 PM in their café, which is closed during the session. Bring a yoga mat if you have one. Extra-large mats are available if you want more cushioning or forget yours.

The class is donation-based, and everything goes directly to the instructor. And you’ll leave with a People’s Food Co-op coupon as a thank-you. Check out their event calendar for more information and register here.

Guided Hikes and Workshops at Whitewater State Park

Whitewater State Park

Whitewater State Park offers year-round programs that make getting outside feel a little more meaningful. Their guided hikes vary in length and usually start at the visitor center, where you’ll head out with the park’s naturalist to explore the landscape, local wildlife, and the area’s history.

Programs change throughout the year, so it’s worth checking Whitewater’s event calendar to find one that fits your schedule.

The park also hosts the Whitewater H.O.P. program, short for Healthy Older People, which meets monthly on the second Wednesday. These sessions focus on education around nature and local history in a relaxed, social setting. For updates, keep an eye on the Friends of Whitewater State Park Facebook page

Art History at Driftless Art Academy

Driftless Art Academy hosts monthly art history presentations and discussions that feel more like a thoughtful conversation than a class you’re expected to sit through. Past sessions have explored Norman Rockwell’s work and realism in American art.

These events are free, but space is limited, so RSVPs are required. To save your spot, email info@driftlessartacademy.com or call 507-535-9318. Follow Driftless Art Academy on Instagram to stay updated on their events.

Bird Banding and Cave Tours at Quarry Hill

Quarry Hill’s bird banding program offers a closer look at why birds are banded and how the process supports conservation, with a chance to watch birds be safely handled and released. The program is free, open to all ages, and offered once a month. Kids 15 and under must attend with an adult.

Quarry Hill also offers cave tours that are part history lesson and part adventure. You’ll explore a sandstone storage cave carved in 1882 and learn about the park’s past. Tours last about an hour and include a ten-minute walk from the Nature Center. They’re best for ages four and up, happen rain or shine unless there’s severe weather, and sturdy shoes are a must.

Both programs are free, but spots are limited, so reservations are recommended. To register, call 507-328-3950.
