Simple, Cute, and Kid-Approved Valentine’s Day Crafts

valentines craftsThis Valentine’s Day, skip the flower shop line and a trip to the dentist by creating these simple, cute and parent-kid approved crafts; perfect for the Galentine, Valentine, teacher, and loved one in your life.


Garden of Love

Materials:

  • Biodegradable pot
  • Plant
  • Paint and brush
  • Frills *foam sticker sheets, felt, google eyes, etc.
  • Hot glue/gun

Decorate a biodegradable pot for your Valentine with all of their favorite things, or keep it simple with a painted heart or clever saying.  Finish off with a succulent or cactus for low maintenance affection.


Love Bugs

Materials:

  • Yarn
  • DIY cardboard or pom-pom maker
  • Google eyes
  • Embellishments *pipe cleaners, puffy paint, felt, etc.
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue/gun

Create a little bug for the loves in your life.  Start by making a pom-pom body using the linked DIY cardboard tutorial, or purchase a pom-pom maker from a craft store.  After creating the body, give your little bug some personality by adding eyes, legs and a mouth.  Attach a pin, magnet or keychain to your love bug for added enjoyment.


Lace Votive Candles

Materials:

  • Glass votives
  • Lace ribbon
  • Mod Podge
  • Foam brush
  • Scissors
  1. Paint the outside of your glass votive using matte-based Mod Podge. *Place votive upside down for best application

2. Position lace while surface is tacky and let dry.  Trim access lace.

3. Add a layer of Mod Podge to the top of the lace and let dry.  Apply additional coats as needed.

4. Add a candle and enjoy!


Sweet Treat Bag

Materials:

  • Canvas bag
  • Embellishments
  • Hot glue
  • Needle and thread
  • Upcycled fabric
  • Felt

Gussy up a boring canvas bag to carry your sweetest Valentines. Decorate your bag using upcycled fabric and paint from around the house in bright and cheery Valentine’s Day colors.


Fabric Broach

Materials:

  • Pin
  • Fabric/Felt *Use a thicker fabric for broach backing
  • Embellishments *pipe cleaners, beads, puffy paint
  • Hot Glue/Gun
  • Scissors
  1. Determine the size of your broach and cut a piece of fabric using thicker material.
  2. Glue a pin to the back of the fabric. *For heavier broaches, secure using a needle and thread
  3. Layer with texture, pattern and shine.
  4. Pin it on!  These make terrific, one-of-a-kind gifts for teachers and loved ones.


Heart Strings Magnet

Materials:

  • Magnet
  • Cardboard
  • Scissors
  • Colored String
  • Tape
  • Pipe cleaners
  • Hot glue/gun
  1. Cut out a heart shape from a piece of cardboard.
  2. Tape a piece of string to the back of the cardboard heart.  Begin wrapping the string, securing with tape as you go.  Continue until the cardboard heart is covered.
  3. Use a glob of hot glue, securing a magnet to the back.
  4. Decorate the heart with pipe cleaners and other embellishments.


Yarn Heart Wreath

Materials:

  • Heart shaped metal wreath
  • Yarn *Recommendation: Use thicker yarn for less time
  • Scissors
  • Patience
  1. Pop in a movie or a podcast.  Hallmark channel has some ooey-gooey, lovey-dovey content this time of year.
  2. Cut a thousand yarn strips, and then cut some more.  For thin yarn, cut strips about 12 inches long, and double fold.  For thicker yarn, cut 5 inch strips.
  3. Add yarn: Create a knot by pulling the two ends of the yarn up through the loop and pull taut.  Alternate the yarn between the metal rows, working your way around the wreath.  You can also secure yarn to each individual row if you are incorporating additional colors or aiming for a fluffy wreath.

3. Trim excess length, hang, and enjoy.


DIY Friendship Necklaces

Materials:

  • Beads *wood, pony, glass
  • String/yarn *should easily glide through bead holes
  • Felt/fabric
  • Embellishments *pipe cleaners, paint, gems and sequin
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue/gun
  1. Cut out a heart from your chosen fabric.  Bonus – cut a heart in half and gift the other half to your BFF.
  2. Punch/cut two holes in heart shape.
  3. String yarn through the heart, placing it in the middle of your necklace.
  4. Decorate on either side of the heart using a variety of beads.
  5. Gussy up your heart by using shiny, stand out objects.


Heart Crowns

Materials:

  • Pipe cleaners
  • Ribbon
  • Felt/fabric
  • Google eyes
  • Texture, pattern and shine (puffy paint, sequin, gem stones)
  • Hot glue/gun
  1. Begin by twisting pipe cleaners together to make a crown.  Add additional length as needed.
  2. Cut characters, flowers and hearts using a variety of material and embellish using google eyes, puffy paint and glitter glue.  Let dry.
  3. Once dry, complete your crown by adding a variety of ribbons to the backside.
  4. Make sure the crown doesn’t slip.


Cross Stitch Earrings

Materials:

  • Nickel-free earring posts
  • Needle and thread
  • Cross stitch fabric
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue/gun

Cross stitch a sweet shape, cut, and secure using hot glue to an earring post.  This super simple craft idea packs a stylish punch.
