Menstrual Cup 101 : The Girlfriend Scoop

A few months ago, I’d had enough with tampons and all the garbage that comes with your regular monthly period.  I clogged the toilet a few times, and my husband was just as annoyed.  Several years ago I heard about the menstrual cup, but it was just TOO weird for me at that time.  After my toilet-clogging, tampon-buying, pad-changing frustration reached an all-time high, I was ready to give this thing a shot.  Luckily, my friend had accidentally purchased an extra and sold it to me.  They come very sealed, so I knew it had never been used.

The first time I used it was a little tricky, but I’m certain I will never go back.

A few things to note:

When using it the first time, I would start towards the end of your period so you can get used to it without a heavy flow.

When putting the menstrual cup in, squeeze the top together and then fold it in half.  When you put it in menstrual cup, rochester mn moms blog, and release it will automatically create a little bit of a suction. If the word “suction” concerns you, simply pinch it a bit, before you pull it out.  I’ve never done this and just pulled it out and it felt fine.  Most of them have a little tab on the bottom you can use to pull.

Once you have the cup out, dump the blood in the toilet, rinse out and use again.  If you are in a public restroom you can just re-use, but it is nice to rinse.  I’ve had to double flush a few times, to avoid questions from the toddler detectives that live with me.

During a heavy day, I will change it every 6 or 7 hours.  On lighter days just once in the morning and once before I go to bed.  I will wear a liner occasionally on heavy days, but I’ve never needed it.

In all honesty, it’s a little awkward and takes a few times to get comfortable with using.  You do get a little more “up close and personal,” but since when are we scared of our own bodies?  I touch barf at least once a day.  Getting your period means your body is working effectively, so let’s embrace it!

Typical buying instructions say if you are over 30 to get a large, but I have a small, and it works perfectly.  My menstrual cup came with a nice cloth sack for storage, and you can purchase a wash for cleaning.

I cleaned out my drawer the other day and got rid of most of my supplies, I saved a small stash in case I have a guest that needs something, but it was so nice to purge!

Give it a try!  If you’re like me, you’ll never go back!
