Eagle Bluff Has a Crocheted Fungi Hunt and It’s Exactly as Delightful as It Sounds

If you’re looking for a reason to get outside and do something a little unexpected this summer, this might be it.

Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center in Lanesboro has launched a free outdoor art experience called the Eagle Bluff Fungi Hunt, which runs through October 31, 2026. Rochester-based fiber and installation artist Lydia Hansen has hand-crocheted dozens of mushrooms inspired by native Minnesota fungi species and hidden them along a 0.75-mile trail loop. Each one is paired with interpretive signage about the role of fungi in Minnesota’s ecosystems.

If this sounds familiar, that’s because it is! In 2024, Lydia installed the Lost Creek Fungi Hunt along the Lost Creek Trail in Chatfield, MN.  We’re really thrilled that another partnership has been developed with Eagle Bluff, as searching for crocheted mushrooms along a beautifully wooded trail is just something you have to smile about.

Guided Hikes This Summer

Eagle Bluff is also planning guided fungi and lichen hikes led by Tanner Barnharst, a Minnesota Master Naturalist and author of two lichen field guides. More details are coming soon, but if that’s your kind of thing, it’s worth keeping on your radar. Stay up-to-date by visiting the Eagle Bluff Public Events calendar.

This project is made possible by the voters of Minnesota through a grant from the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council, thanks to a legislative appropriation from the Arts and Cultural Heritage Fund.

Lanesboro is about 45 minutes south of Rochester and honestly worth the drive on its own. Pair the Fungi Hunt with a visit to one of the nearby caves or a stroll through Lanesboro’s charming downtown, and you’ll have a really lovely day trip!
