Tips from a DIY Painter – How to Paint the Walls

After choosing a paint color, purchasing the paint and gathering the supplies, it’s time to paint!  Now- many articles, videos and painters will tell you that you should paint in a “W” pattern on the walls.  I have never done that.  I just paint straight up and down, as demonstrated in this video.  Untitled from Angela Nelson on Vimeo. Full disclosure, I had my daughter record the video while I painted the kids bathroom.  I didn’t shower, didn’t put on makeup and there are even dogs barking in the background.  Just another manic Sunday.

After the first coat of paint has dried for a few hours, I do a second coat.  Speaking of second coats- some paints claim to cover in one coat but really I think that’s a lie.  Maybe it is personal preference but I think two coats always looks so much better. Also, as you will see in the video, you can backroll your coat so that the walls have a nice even finish to them!  Don’t shortcut your drying time however, you want the paint to set up and not get stuck to your roller. Be patient and trust the process, it will be worth it.

Our bathroom is done and looks so much better!  Hopefully these tips and tricks will help you choose a color you love, find the supplies you need to complete your paint job, and help make it as easy as possible!  Thanks for following along with my DIY Painting tips!  If you missed out on the previous two posts, you can click here to find the first one about selecting a paint color . Perhaps you have a dreamy color picked out and you’d just like to learn some new tips for prepping your space and selecting tools. Have fun and good luck! Remember-its just paint!
