Deleting My Facebook Tic

This may be super un-cool, but I recently decided to delete my Facebook App. I don’t really use Instagram much and haven’t ever been on Twitter. I don’t really want to go into it all that much but I’ll just say this was one of the BEST decisions I have made – ever! I still wanted to stay connected to my friends and use Marketplace but was tired of feeling sucked in. Keeping my page but deleting the app was the best of both worlds. I get my life back, but don’t need to give up my secondhand finds. WIN!

One thing that was hard to delete though was what I am calling my Facebook Tic… it was that sudden urge to check something. After I initially deleted my app, I found myself glitching every once in a while. I would pull out my phone and then realize, there was nothing to check. No status to update. No friends to creep on. Not even anything to scroll through.

I haven’t ever been addicted to anything, but I’d imagine my Facebook Tic feels kind of like quitting tobacco cold turkey – except way less intense. “There is a thing I used to do here and now it’s gone.”  “How do I manage now without scrolling through Facebook?” “What do I do with all my new-found free time?”… The answer: ANYTHING YOU WANT!

Since getting rid of my Facebook Tic I have done so many things. I started baking sourdough, yeast breads, pies, dessert breads, cookies, lots of yummy things. I’ve been cooking new foods for our family suppers. I made fried pickles the other night that were especially delicious! Reading (I could use more book suggestions). Cleaning. Spending time with my boys–real quality time. The list goes on and on. I have found that without my Facebook Tic, I have so much more free time to do lots of new hobbies I never had time for before.

If this were a commercial for a new, amazing prescription drug, this would be the scene where the middle-aged woman is sculpting pottery in slow motion. Slowly tying her shoes to go for a walk. Collecting seashells. The only difference here is that there won’t be a list of nasty side effects at the end of the commercial. There are no down sides to deleting my Facebook app. I feel more connected to everyone around me. More mentally stable. More personally fulfilled. I got rid of my Facebook Tic, and I can’t recommend it highly enough!
